The Angry Earth

What causes the earth to become angry?

In this learning challenge we will investigate questions like “What are earthquakes and volcanoes? Where in the world do we find them? What do a volcanic eruptions and an earthquakes look and sound like? What causes earthquakes and how can they be measured? How do volcanoes and earthquakes affect the lives of people? What happened in Pompeii?”

In English we will use a fiction book called ‘Escape from Pompeii’. This is a tale of a youth called Tranio, who once described the mountain of Vesuvius as ‘Pompeii’s greatest protector’’ to witness its destructive power on the city below. We will use the book to imagine what life was like in Pompeii before and .after the volcano struck. We will learn how to develop our creative writing skills through techniques of planning and drafting and learn how to use non-fiction texts to develop specialist vocabulary and sentence structure etc.

In Maths we will look at longitude and latitude to describe where earthquakes and volcanoes can be found on planet Earth. We will also learn how to use mathematical language to identify and draw 2-d shapes of volcanoes and use co-ordinates to plot their position. Using digital images and animation in Computing, we will find out how the Earth moves, develop our mathematical skills of prediction and estimation and will learn how to represent and interpret these ideas through a range of digital graphs, maps and charts.

In Science and in Design and Technology we will build on our knowledge of how properties and materials change and we will make a working model of the Pompeii Volcano using a variety of different chemicals to simulate a volcanic explosion.

In Geography we will look at the causes of volcanoes and earthquakes and their destructive influences on people’s lives. Using Atlases and digital maps we will locate the world’s earthquake zones and volcanoes. While in History we will look at why the ancient Mayan Civilization settled close to and regarded volcanoes as a precious resource.

Finally,  in Art we will look at master pieces depicting the angry earth like William Turner’s painting entitled ‘Mount Vesuvius in Eruption,’ to inspire our creative ability. While in Music we will try to recreate the sound of earthquakes and volcanoes through different rhythms and musical sounds and structures.
