YEAR 1 CURRICULUM
Santa’s Secret Workshop
What goes on in Santa’s Secret Workshop?
In this learning challenge we will explore the question ‘What goes on in Santa’s Secret Workshop?’
In English we will develop our speaking and listening skills through group discussions and working together as a group. In reading we will use the book ‘Dogger’ to help us sound words and understand their meanings. Finally, in writing we will learn how to spell new words and write exciting sentences using capital letters and full stops.
In Maths we will use our new knowledge about toys to work out their cost, size and weight and learn to use simple lists, tables and charts to sort, group and organise our findings.
In Science we will identify, name and describe the everyday materials used to make some of the toys in Santa’s Workshop. We will look at how Santa chooses the right materials to make a toy last.
In Design and Technology we will make a simple toy like a finger puppet and/or a model boat and consider the everyday materials used to make it work. In Music we will learn how to use our voices expressively and creatively by singing some of the songs that the elves sign in Santa’s Workshop. In Computing we will learn how to record the sound patterns made by different toys and program then how to move.
In Geography we will explore the different types of toys which can be found in different parts of the world. We will learn how to use atlases and globes to help us name and locate the world’s seven continents and five oceans. In history we will look at some types of toys children played with that reveal the changes that have occurred in national life.
Finally in PE we will learn to develop our sense of co-ordination through using a variety of toys like bats, balls, hula-hoops, bean bags etc.
