Plants Plants Everywhere
Plants, Plants, Everywhere! Can pumpkins really grow in the woodlands?
In this learning challenge we will explore the questions like ‘Can pumpkins really grow in the woodlands?’ How does your garden grow? And how do seeds grow into mature plants? We will also look at the types of plants that grow in our school grounds and our surrounding locality.
In English we will read together the following books; Pumpkin Soup, The Magic School Bus Plants Seeds and How do Plants Grow! We will use the books to help us develop our reading and writing and how to write and follow instructions accurately.
In Maths we will look at the 2D and 3D shapes and patterns in plants. We will collect specimens of plants and measure and weigh in order to group and to classify them.
In Science we will observe and describe how seeds and plants grow to mature into mature plants. As scientists we will find out and describe how plants need water, light and suitable temperature to grow and stay healthy.
Through Music we will learn to sing a range of songs such as ‘An English Country Garden’ and ‘Lavender Blue’. We will also learn to play a range of tuned and untuned instruments to recreate the sound and feelings of seasons. In Computing we will use technology purposefully to create, organise, store, manipulate and retrieve digital content about plants.
In Geography we will learn about the seasonal and daily weather patterns in the UK which affect the cycle of plant growth. We will also use atlases and globes to identify the hot and cold areas of the world in relation to its main lines of latitude and longitude and vegetation zones. At a local level we will make maps of our school grounds to help us describe the location of plants that grow there. In History, we will look the life and discoveries of famous botanists like Sir Walter Raleigh, Albert Einstein and/or David Bellamy etc.
Finally, in Art we will use a range of materials to make a collage and/or a sculpture inspired by two of Van Gough’s paintings entitled ‘Sunflowers’ and ‘Vase with Gladioli and Irises’.
