Invaders and Settlers
Who were the early invaders and settlers of Britain and what can we learn from them?
In this learning challenge we will be looking the invasions and the settling of the Vikings, Anglo-Saxons and the Normans in Britain. We will investigate questions like ‘Who were the Vikings, Anglo-Saxons and Normans? What battles did they fight? Who were their kings? What was life like in these times? What is their legacy today?
In English we will read together the story called ‘How to train a Dragon’, by Cressida Cowell. This book is about Hiccup Horrendous Haddock 3rd, an awesome sword-fighter, a dragon-whisperer and the greatest Viking Hero who ever lived. But he wasn’t always liked. When reading this book we will pay attention to how the author has told the story and the natural themes he used to interest the reader. We will use the story to help us to realise the importance of planning and redrafting our work. We will also read a number of non-fiction texts about the Vikings, Anglo-Saxons and the Normans to develop our skill of reading for information.
In Maths we will look at some of the object and structures the Invaders and settlers left behind them to develop our mathematical skills relating to shape, space and measurement. Throughout this learning challenge we will also develop our skills of estimation, geometry and arithmetic.
In Science we will look at how the light source from the Sun and reflected light from the moon played an important part in the lives of these invaders and settlers. We will investigate how light travels, is reflected and how shadows are formed.
