Year 3: Food Glorious Food!
Where does our food come from?
In this learning challenge we will investigate questions like ‘What foods keep us healthy? What does a balanced diet look like? How are nutrients transported around our bodies? Which foods make our bodies stronger? How does food help our bodies grow? And how does food and exercise keep us healthy?’
In English we will read together the story of ‘The Enormous Crocodile’, by Roald Dahl. The Enormous Crocodile is a greedy, grumptious brute who loves to guzzle up little boys and girls. He’s a terrible boaster and very proud of his secret plans and clever tricks, like disguising himself as a seesaw for careless little children to sit on. Crunch! But the other jungle animals have had enough of this foul fiend’s horrid schemes – so they devise a plan to get the better of him, once and for all! We will use the book to find out how the author develops the characters and setting of the story through themes like ‘greed’, ‘pride and deception’ and ‘justice’ etc. We will also use the story to help us imagine and explore our feelings and use of creative language in our writing and learn how to plan our work.
In Maths we will use the story of ‘The Enormous Crocodile’ to develop our mathematical ideas and skills related to 2D and 3D shapes and their properties and we will learn how to measure accurately. We will also learn how to draw a range of graphs and charts to show foods help our bodies to grow strong.
In Science we will learn to identify that animals, including humans need the right type and amount of nutrition to survive and that they get nutrition from what they eat. This nutrition is gained from a variety of food chains.
In Design and Technology, we will look at foods which provide us with a healthy diet and we will prepare and cook a savoury dish form a range of seasonal ingredients. While in Computing, we will use search technologies, safely and effectively, to discern digital content relating to healthy eating.
In Geography we will name and locate the countries and regions that our food comes from in the UK and wider world and describe why climate and the water cycle are important for growing food. In History we will follow a line of enquiry which briefly looks at how diets in Britain have changed through time.
Finally, in Art we will make a variety of sculptures, using a range of different foods to improve our mastery of art and design techniques, while in Music we will play and perform the song ‘Food Glorious Food’ using voices and instruments.
